Neurotransmitter Testing & Treatment Options

Neurotransmitter Blog Cover with Nicole Theiler headshot

Neurotransmitter testing is a diagnostic tool used to measure the levels of various neurotransmitters in your body. Common symptoms that prompt testing include chronic fatigue, insomnia, unexpected anxiety, and frequent panic attacks. For many, these issues are not just situational but can be tied to chemical imbalances that neurotransmitter testing can identify.

The Testing Process

Neurotransmitter testing is relatively straightforward. Patients take our test kit home and complete a saliva test taken at various times throughout the day to measure fluctuations in neurotransmitter levels. This is because neurotransmitter levels are supposed to be higher in the morning and lower at night. Additionally, a urine sample is collected to provide a comprehensive overview of your neurotransmitter activity.

This minimally invasive test is an excellent option for children, teens, and adults, as it can be done at home and doesn't require blood samples.

The completed test kits are then sent to the lab for testing. Once the results are processed, we use the objective data from the test to identify and target pathways connected to occasional symptoms and neuroendocrine imbalances.

Natural Solutions to Neurotransmitter Imbalances

One of the significant benefits of neurotransmitter testing is that it opens the door to natural treatment options. Rather than immediately resorting to prescription medications, which often come with side effects, we can explore supplements and lifestyle changes to support neurotransmitter balance.

Most people are aware of tryptophan, an amino acid found in turkey, thanks to Thanksgiving. Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, and while it’s not feasible to consume enough turkey to significantly boost serotonin levels, it's a good example of dietary impacts on neurotransmitters.

This is where supplements can provide the necessary boost in support. A tailored  approach to supplement dosage and lifestyle changes can be particularly beneficial for those looking to manage their mental health more holistically.

Final Thoughts

Neurotransmitter testing provides a deeper understanding of the chemical imbalances that may be affecting your mental health. By identifying these imbalances, we can develop a personalized treatment plan that includes natural supplements and dietary adjustments. This holistic approach not only addresses the symptoms but also targets the root causes, promoting long-term mental wellness.

Taking charge of your mental health involves exploring all available options. Neurotransmitter testing is a powerful tool that, combined with natural supplements, can lead to significant improvements in how you feel and function daily. Always consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action for your unique needs.
