De-stigmatizing Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile Dysfunction - Blog Post cover with Dr. Blend headshot

ED is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. This condition can stem from both psychological factors (such as depression, stress, and anxiety) and physical problems (such as medication side effects, nerve or artery injuries, and diseases like diabetes and kidney disease).

ED is not a reflection of your masculinity or virility. It is a medical condition with numerous causes, but most commonly attributed to physical factors (medication side effects, injuries, diseases affecting circulation (like diabetes and kidney disease), low testosterone, smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, and more) and psychological factors (depression, stress, anxiety, relationship problems).

ED is more prevaltent than many realize, impacting many men across age various groups:

Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction

Common symptoms of ED include:

Understanding the Sexual Response Cycle

The sexual response cycle consists of four phases: desire/libido, excitement/arousal, orgasm, and resolution. ED can negatively impact any of these phases. Through a short questionnaire called SHIM (Sexual Health Inventory for Men) and a thorough history review and physical examination, we can evaluate your sexual health and identify the best treatment options for you.

To diagnose ED, we conduct a comprehensive history and physical examination, along with laboratory tests, saliva tests, and evaluations of testosterone and other hormone levels. Treatment options are varied and can be tailored to individual needs:

Taking Control of Your Sexual Health

Sexual health is a vital part of overall well-being. A healthy sex life can increase joy, longevity, tissue health, and sleep quality while reducing depression and stress. If you’re not enjoying this aspect of your life, seek professional advice to explore your options. There are many solutions available for both males and females.

Open Communication: A Key to Overcoming ED

If you experience changes in your sexual health, it's important to talk to your doctor. There is no shame in seeking help for ED – it is a treatable condition, and addressing it can significantly improve your quality of life.

Support for Partners

Open communication about sexual health helps foster understanding, trust, and well-being in relationships and society. By talking openly with your partner and healthcare provider, you can take the first step toward finding a solution that works for you.

Partners can play a crucial role in supporting men with ED. Encourage open dialogue and express your concerns and feelings. Remember, ED is a medical condition and not a reflection of your relationship. Working together to address it can strengthen your bond and improve your mutual sexual satisfaction.
